What Makes This Essay Ineffective?

The hammer metaphor is hard to understand. Too much of the first half of the essay is a lesson about languages and about the different languages the family speaks rather than on what languages the applicant speaks and why that is important. This essay feels tedious to read and it's likely that around the third paragraph the reader will start to scan to find out what the point of the essay is.
